Draw This Again: Spirit Taker by AlfaFilly Draw This Again: Spirit Taker by AlfaFilly
Original: [link]
Remake: [link]

Quite a startling difference, I'd say 8D

Quoted from remake description:
"After two nights of hard work I finally got this done! This is for the deviantART "Draw this Again" contest. The deadline is in... 2 hours. I GOT THIS.

So I've been wanting to redo an old picture of mine, but didn't know quite what to do. I ended up deciding to go to my very first submission on dA ever, back to 2006. Although the actual image itself is dated 2002.

So much nostalgia happened while drawing this. It's really insane seeing how much I've improved in this vast of time. While I wish I had improved a slight bit more in anatomy for my quadrupeds, there's no doubt my artistic skills have excelled, especially in the digital platform. I really wanted to show the stark difference in how I've evolved from working with generic Crayola Colored pencil to Photoshop. So I really poured a lot of what I know now about shading and details into this remake. And I think it really shows!"

I have to say, this is one of the most impressive displays of improvement that I have seen so far (and believe me when I say that my watch list has been overflowing with these ). I hope that you feel very proud of the love and effort that you have put into your work! It really shows.

Ooh, why thank you so much! Haha, I'm sure you did! I was a little disappointed as I was expecting my inbox to be flooded with them, but by the deadline only 3 others posted (or maybe just 2, I'm having trouble remembering who the third was). I could have taken a picture from my gallery from just a couple years ago (which I notice most people did) but I figured, hey, I wanna see how much I've really improved, so I'm glad my choice ended up paying off! :D

Look at the skull of the criature... the first one is more real than the second... the second one is more like... a shoe e.e (please don't hate me > . < )

pssh, I would never hate you! xD
I can't exactly agree with you, though. The skull of the first is pretty inaccurate, primarily in the snout. That snout is... yeah. No. pffff But I do see what you mean. I think the problem is that the original and the revamp and in two totally different angles. You can't really compare the first with the second because the first is in a 3/4 angle and the second is in an upwards angle. As far as I can tell on an anatomical standpoint the shape of the head is accurate, if not off by a slight bit with the snout placement.

I can see what you mean about the "shoe" shape, but that's sorta what canine heads look like. Except their snout slope down a slight bit more, I think. [link]

Even though I guess this thing isn't really a canine, but it's what it's based on xD

I get it ^w^ but.. I make the canine skulls different.. making a sort of mash-up with foxe's ones (: this way it's more.. I don't know .. pretty?

It's funny to talk to you (:

haha yeah, I like fox skulls too, the snouts are way more slender and stuff compared to, say, wolves. I think a lot of times I draw my canine-like creatures more like domesticated dogs than wild ones for some reason... xD

I'm happy about this! 8D

I don't know about better, since it's hard to compare 2 drawings when they've been drawn in different media, but they're certainly different. Not necessarily any worse or better. I actually kinda like the style of the older one a little better even though it's not as dynamic of a picture =)

I don't really know if I could agree that it's a "style" as much as "Anatomy what is that??" for the first. But compared to the newer version, which entails more realism in comparison to the lined, simplistic cartoon style, it can be a bit harder to compare, definitely. Though the different mediums was done on purpose.
